Extra Large Victorian Blue & White Transferware Platter

Extra Large Victorian Blue & White Transferware Platter

£155.00

A beautiful and impressive large Victorian blue and white transferware oval serving platter, measuring approximately 56 x 44 cm (22 x 17 inches).
The centre features a finely detailed classical scene depicting Bacchus (Dionysus) and Ariadne with a cherub (putto), set within an idyllic landscape. The wide border is decorated with an elegant grapevine and fruit motif, complementing the classical theme.

The reverse bears the desirable Victorian backstamp: "The Drawings for this Dinner Service are by 'PHIZ' H.K. Browne."
Hablot Knight Browne ("PHIZ") was one of the most celebrated Victorian illustrators, best known for his work illustrating Charles Dickens' novels. Pieces bearing this attribution are sought after by collectors of Victorian transferware.

The Registration Diamond indicates a design registered in the early 1860s, consistent with the old handwritten label on the reverse dated 14th March 1862, which has been retained with the piece as part of its history.

A wonderful statement piece for collectors of Victorian ceramics, blue and white transferwarePHIZ memorabilia, or anyone looking for an elegant decorative platter with genuine 19th-century history.
