Vintage heavy-duty commercial wicker laundry or linen hamper

A wonderfully substantial vintage English commercial wicker/willow laundry or linen hamper, dating from the mid-20th century.

Originally made for the demanding environment of laundries, hotels, hospitals and linen services, this is a particularly impressive example, with its heavy-duty woven construction, reinforced hinged lid and original leather straps and buckles.

The large proportions make it both highly practical and wonderfully decorative, while the beautifully aged wicker gives it the character and presence that comes only with genuine age and use. The weave remains remarkably complete for its age, with the original binding intact and the leather straps still present and fully functional.

A substantial and increasingly hard-to-find piece of commercial laundry history, equally at home as a linen hamper, blanket store, laundry basket or simply as a striking period storage piece.

Condition

Exceptionally clean and solid for an old commercial basket. It is structurally sound, with the usual signs of age and working use. There is some distortion to the wicker, together with wear to the leather straps and buckles, all of which contribute to its authentic character and patina.
The woven body remains remarkably complete, the binding is intact, and the original leather straps are present and fully functional.

Use

Perfect for linen and bedding, as a generous laundry hamper, or for storing blankets and quilts at the foot of the bed, this substantial piece offers both practicality and presence. Its generous proportions and sturdy commercial construction make it wonderfully versatile, while its beautifully aged wicker brings warmth, texture and unmistakable period character to an interior.
